about the project
For a short film about depression by Rudy Niemeijer.
The film is about a young student who was trapped by depression during his adolescence, but has recovered reasonably well in recent years, partly due to the tireless support of his mother. The story begins when his mother turns out to be terminally ill. His somewhat apathetic stepfather tries to absorb the blows, but the boy falls further and further. His mother can no longer support him, he has no one to talk to about it. He plays with the idea of suicide. The big question: can he still fight it, or is it too late?
The story is written around a recently released R&B EP. The music dictates the speed of the film, but creates a deep void in the scenes where it is completely silent. The film makes extensive use of symbolism and sharp contrasts.
Filming is due for Feb & Mar 2023. During the spring break (North region), other shooting days to be determined. About 13 shooting days in total.
On average, just over 20 young people up to the age of 30 die by suicide every month in the Netherlands. This has only increased in recent times. The disease depression plays a major role in this. About 1 in 5 adults will experience depression in their lifetime, with the group of young adults most often affected. Despite the fact that it occurs so much, it is still too little talked about in society. This film raises this subject, and does not shy away from the taboos surrounding depression, loneliness and suicide.
