How to Book Bigger Roles

As actors we often plateau; this means we reach a certain level and find ourselves doing the same type of role over and over. This might mean we always play small “featured extra” roles. Or perhaps we always play minor 1 day shoot roles.

But as actors we always want bigger roles. If you are always a featured extra, you might want to step up to 1 or 2 day speaking roles. Then playing decent supporting characters in indie films. Then lead roles in indie films. Then supporting roles in bigger films and, perhaps ultimately, lead roles in bigger films.

Add into this guest starring roles in series, series regular roles, and so on. You can see there are always levels in acting and actors always want to move to the next level.

The key, of course, is never to stop pushing. It’s not easy to get to the next level, and really and truly it only happens if you are consistent, work hard, and never give up.

Booking bigger roles

So booking bigger roles in the world of European films can be challenging. Here are some essential tips for you to get there though. If you go through this list and do what you can – and never give up – you will get there in the end!

  1. Master Your Craft: Take acting classes, work with a coach, and continuously improve your abilities. Acting is an art, and the more you refine it, the better your chances of landing substantial roles.
  2. Build a Strong Portfolio: Compile a compelling enCAST profile that showcases your range and talent. Include headshots, a well-edited showreel, and a professionally written CV. Make sure your profile represents the roles you aspire to play so that when you send someone to your profile, they’ll see exactly who you are and what you’re capable of.

  3. Keep IMDb Current: Make sure your IMDb profile is always current and highlights your best jobs – the kind of jobs you want more of!
  4. Network: In the film industry, who you know can be as important as what you know. Attend film festivals, industry events, and workshops. Build relationships with directors, casting agents, and fellow actors. Networking can open doors to bigger opportunities.

  5. Audition Actively: Stay proactive in seeking auditions. Make sure you learn about every single opportunity on enCAST as well as other reputable casting websites, follow casting calls, and audition regularly. Even if a role seems small, auditioning consistently increases your visibility and experience. Remember what they say: there’s no such thing as a small role as it could lead to a big role!

  6. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with industry trends and opportunities. Subscribe to film magazines, follow industry news, and join online forums where casting calls and advice are shared.

  7. Embrace Rejection: Rejection is part of the actor’s journey. Don’t let it discourage you. Learn from feedback, if provided, and use each audition as a chance to grow.

  8. Work on Your Marketing: In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. Maintain an active social media presence, share your achievements, and engage with your audience.

  9. Seek Representation: If you’re serious about pursuing bigger roles, consider securing professional representation. An agent or manager can help you navigate the industry, negotiate contracts, and access more significant opportunities.

  10. Stay Persistent: Success in acting often requires resilience. Keep auditioning, improving your skills, and learning from each experience. Many successful actors faced numerous setbacks before achieving fame.

  11. Learn the Language: If you are involved in European films being well-versed in another language is a valuable asset. It expands your casting options and allows you to engage with diverse audiences.

  12. New Skills: Anything extra you can offer is a bonus. If you don’t know already, why not learn to ride a horse, or take screen combat lessons, or… well anything really!

In conclusion, booking bigger roles in European films is a journey that demands dedication and continuous self-improvement. Stay committed to your craft, network actively, and be prepared for the challenges that come your way. Remember, success in acting often comes to those who persevere and adapt to the evolving industry landscape.
