about the project

Seeking talent for "Clothes Swap," a new play targeted at LGBTQ+ young people, and young people more broadly, aged 14-25. It is a comedy-drama set in an LGBTQ+ youth club under threat of closure and interference from outsiders who don’t understand why a queer safe space is important.

Featuring a cast of young queer characters, their protective but exhausted youth leader, and a suspicious, older outsider who sees the group as a threat to her group. Clothes Swap celebrates queer expression in young people and the joys and solidarity of the queer community when it is under threat. But it also celebrates the power of dialogue, shared understanding and realising there is more in common that unites us, than separates us.

This project has been funded through Arts Council England National Lottery funding.

Location: Greater Manchester
Dates: April-July 2024.
Closing Date 6th Apr 2024

Paid: GBP 1210.00 / flat rate

Looking to fill the following roles:
role 1 | actors | m/f
playing age: 18 - 25
role languages: Anglais
ASH
m, 18-25
Confident and excitable. He likes to talk about pop culture and musicals but is also naïve, and any conversations about his home life or political topics are quickly shut down. Winds up Den, regardless if he intends to or not. Sometimes acts before he thinks.

*Please note that although the character is under 18, we will only be casting actors aged 18+ who can convincingly play someone under 18.

TATUM
m/f, 18-25
Is quiet and intelligent. They run a popular YouTube channel about Pokémon and are also music-obsessed. Initially only turns up for the clothes swap and ends up an integral part of the youth club. Mature, wise, willing to listen to others and dislikes drama, often mediating situations.

*Please note that although the character is under 18, we will only be casting actors aged 18+ who can convincingly play someone under 18.

DEN
f, 18-25
Is passionate, well-meaning but sometimes antagonistic. She is always discussing the hypocrisy in society and is annoyed by Ash’s ambivalence towards the struggles of queer people.

*Please note that although the character is under 18, we will only be casting actors aged 18+ who can convincingly play someone under 18.
role 2 | actors | female
playing age: 30 - 45
role languages: Anglais
CHRIS
f, 30-45
Runs the youth club, and is a mother figure to all. She is sure of herself and her opinions, though sometimes this means she struggles to listen and find common ground with those she disagrees with. She talks to members of the club as young adults, not children and is protective of its members, however is not afraid to tell them when they are wrong. Her frustration with the threat of closure is the reason for her frustration and conflict with Val.
role 3 | actors | female
playing age: 60 - 99
role languages: Anglais
VAL
f, 60+
Shares the youth club building to run a women’s group, which she is also very protective of its members. She is interested in other people’s business. She sees members of the youth group as noisy, disruptive and possibly a threat when sharing the building, and tends to speak down to them mostly due to their age. Val should not be portrayed as a villain.
