Ban this word from your emails – NOT!

We’re going to talk about a small thing that makes a big difference. It’s about the emails you send when you want to get a role.

Quite simply, there is one word you should avoid at all costs: NOT.

You might wonder why. It’s only a word, isn’t it? Well, words are very important. They create feelings and images in our mind. In our acting world, we want to show that we’re positive and confident. The word ‘not’ can bring a little bit of darkness into your message.

Why is NOT a problem?

So, why is ‘not’ a problem? It’s because of how our brains work.

First, the word is so powerful that when we read it, the meaning stands out and affects all the words and phrases around it.

You might say, “I’m not available in early July,” but what the CD hears is that there’s a problem with your dates so they might have a problem with you so perhaps they should look elsewhere.

And second, studies show that people who use negative words are often seen as less positive in general.

You might say that you’re free for the dates in July but “I haven’t played a doctor before.” Immediately the CD thinks you lack confidence and perhaps you might not be up to the job so perhaps they’d better look somewhere else for an actor.

Remember, your email represents you and NOT makes you sound negative and unsure.

How do we solve this?

Fortunately, it’s really easy to solve this.

Being honest is important. No one is asking you to pretend to be someone you’re not. But the way you talk about your experiences and goals can change how people see you.

So all you do is turn a negative into positive!

Don’t write, “I’m not available in early July”. Instead, say “I’m free from mid-July onwards.”

Don’t write “I haven’t played a doctor before”. Instead write, “I’d really like to take on the role of a doctor.”

Suddenly the CD thinks of you as a positive actor up for a challenge and ready to take on the role. You’ve just made a small change in your emails which has had a huge impact.

Every email you send is a chance to show your best self. Remove the word ‘not’ from your emails and see how things change for the better.

Good luck with your acting, and remember – being positive can change your life. Let’s start with your emails!
