Chip Baskets, a man with dreams of becoming a respected French clown, returns to Bakersfield, California after failing out of a prestigious Parisian clowning school, and is forced to take a job as a rodeo clown. Saddled with a French wife who barely speaks English and is mainly interested in his visa status, he leans on his devoted, pragmatic mother and struggles to reconcile his artistic ambitions with his mundane circumstances.
