Dubois: The Quest for the Missing Link

(2013)

A Dutch biographical drama following Eugène Dubois, the nineteenth-century anatomist and palaeontologist who became obsessed with proving Darwin's theory of evolution by finding the transitional fossil between apes and humans. Driven by an almost fanatical conviction, he abandons his medical career in the Netherlands and travels to the Dutch East Indies, where he leads gruelling excavations in Sumatra and Java. His discovery of what he calls *Pithecanthropus erectus* — later known as Java Man — brings him international fame but also fierce scepticism and ridicule from the scientific establishment, leaving him a bitter and isolated figure.
