Australia on Trial - Massacre at Myall Creek

Directed by Ana Kokkinos (2012)

A documentary examining one of the darkest episodes in Australian colonial history, in which a group of white stockmen murdered around twenty-eight Aboriginal men, women and children at Myall Creek in 1838. The film explores the subsequent legal proceedings, which were remarkable for the fact that seven of the perpetrators were ultimately hanged — an almost unprecedented outcome at a time when violence against Indigenous Australians was rarely punished. Through dramatisation and historical analysis, it considers what the case reveals about colonial attitudes, justice, and the broader treatment of Aboriginal people.
