Les Misérables

A BBC television adaptation of Victor Hugo's celebrated novel, following the escaped convict Jean Valjean as he attempts to build a new life and redeem himself whilst being relentlessly pursued across decades by the obsessive Inspector Javert. Along the way, Valjean becomes the guardian of young Cosette, the neglected daughter of the tragic Fantine, and their fates become entangled with the revolutionary fervour sweeping nineteenth-century France. The series explores themes of justice, mercy, and the cruelty of a society that offers little forgiveness to those who have transgressed.
