A British woman looks back on her youth in the 1930s and 40s, when she became romantically entangled with communist sympathisers whilst working as a scientist involved in Britain's nuclear programme. Influenced by her idealistic beliefs and personal loyalties, she begins secretly passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Decades later, as an elderly grandmother, she is arrested by MI5 and must confront the consequences of choices she made long ago.
