Goya's Ghosts
Directed by Milos Forman
Set in late 18th-century Spain during the Inquisition, the film follows the painter Francisco Goya as he becomes entangled in the fates of a young woman imprisoned by the Church and the zealous monk who denounced her. Years pass, Napoleon's forces invade, and the monk resurfaces in a changed political landscape, his past crimes catching up with him. The story uses Goya and his art as a backdrop to explore fanaticism, power, and the suffering of ordinary people caught between competing tyrannies.
