A sweeping adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel set in 19th-century France, following the reformed convict Jean Valjean as he rebuilds his life whilst being relentlessly pursued by the obsessive inspector Javert. The story weaves together the fates of numerous characters across decades of poverty, revolution and sacrifice, culminating in the ill-fated Paris student uprising of 1832. Notably performed almost entirely through live-recorded singing rather than conventional lip-syncing, the film features an ensemble cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
