A dedicated unit of New York police detectives investigates sexually based crimes, following cases from the initial report through arrest and, at times, prosecution. The squad, led by veteran detective Olivia Benson, deals with the emotional and procedural challenges of handling some of the most sensitive and disturbing offences. Each episode typically centres on a new case, often drawing on real-world issues and controversies surrounding sexual violence and abuse.
