Based on a memoir, the film traces her spiritual journey across several decades as she struggles to reconcile her intellectual and emotional needs with the demands of her close-knit religious congregation. Vera Farmiga both directs and stars in this intimate character study, which explores the tension between personal identity and communal faith.
