A young mathematician discovers a formula that predicts the inevitable collapse of a vast galactic empire, prompting authorities to view him as a dangerous dissident. To preserve human knowledge and shorten the coming dark age, he establishes a remote colony of scholars known as the Foundation. The series follows the unfolding consequences of his prophecy across generations, as various characters struggle to fulfil or subvert the destiny he foresaw.
