A middle-aged Liverpool housewife, worn down by domestic routine and a loveless marriage, impulsively accepts her friend's invitation to holiday in Greece. There she rediscovingly talks to the wall and the sea, reflects on the dreams she abandoned in youth, and begins a tentative romance with a local man. By the end, she resolves to stay and reclaim her sense of self rather than return to the life that had all but erased her.
