Letters from Baghdad
Directed by Sabine Krayenbühl (2015)
A documentary portrait of Gertrude Bell, the British writer, explorer, archaeologist and political officer whose remarkable influence helped shape the modern Middle East following the First World War. The film draws on Bell's own extensive correspondence and diaries, brought to life through dramatic readings and rare archive footage. It presents her as a singular and often overlooked figure whose counsel was sought by kings and statesmen alike, even as she struggled to be taken seriously in a world dominated by men.
