GIRASOLE follows the story of Rosa – an Australian woman whose world is turned upside down in the space of weeks: she leaves her long- term fiancé, moves back in with her all-consuming Italian mother Gabriella, and finds out that her father’s identity has been kept a secret her entire life. On a whim, and against her mothers will, she flies to Gabriella’s home town in Puglia, Italy, in search of an answer of who she is and where she has come from…
Directed by Tess Emmerson and shooting in April/May 2023 in Italy and Australia.

Adriano - Supporting Lead
On the surface, Adriano is charming and confident (near to the point of arrogance) with everything going for him. Known around town for owning the local bar, he is forced to keep up appearances - but often yearns just to be sheltered. Having recently lost his wife, he is a single father to a one year old daughter. When he meets Rosa, he is definitely not at a time in his grieving journey where he is looking for someone, but there is a magnetism and deeper sense of connection that cannot be denied. Adriano's vulnerabilities and sensitivities are on full display to Rosa - he is not trying to impress her. He is joyful and funny, quick to anger over certain pressure points, but generally remains pretty cool, calm and very suave. His Universe is his father and daughter, and he would do anything for those he loves.

Teresa - Supporting Lead
Teresa is Rosa’s Aunty (Gabriella’s sister). Many years ago, Teresa was deeply betrayed when the love of her life (Mauro) and her sister (Gabriella) had a secret affair. Throughout her quiet and simple life, she has held onto the hurt from her youth, and when Rosa arrives - the niece she never knew existed - she is forced to relive the pain. Teresa is a very traditional Southern-Italian woman and is incredibly family orientated, having poured her life into raising her only daughter, Giovanna. She is very blunt, not sentimental and puts up her steadfast defence in the face of any conflict. She reluctantly lets Rosa into the family, a decision likely based on guilt and persuaded by her daughter. She is hardened, stoic and to-the-point but slowly opens her heart to Rosa.

Giovanna - Supporting Lead

She is very modern, unique and stylish for someone still living in Southern Italy, yet respects and understands the traditions that her mother fiercely upholds. Giovanna is a single mother who has a relaxed and loving relationship with her young son. She is insistent on Rosa becoming part of the family - constantly the driving force for any responsibility and reconciliation. The two have an immediate feminine familial bond as though they've known each other a lifetime. In moments of conflict, Giovanna stands her ground, remains level headed and often manages to push her own agenda. She is assertive, vibrant and funny.

Enzo is the father of Adriano (Rosa’s love interest). He is introverted and eccentric, a gentle man that has felt a lot of pain in his life, but still keeps an open heart. He is a man of the land and relishes in simple pleasures; his small family, his house, garden and his belt-making hobby-turned-business. He treats Rosa like one of the family almost immediately, an instinctive paternal feeling towards her. Though he is the ‘man of the house’, he has a softness that allows freedom and mutual respect with his son. His little quirks and eccentricities balance out his simple life. He is warm, giving and upfront.
