Making an “About Me” Self-Tape

Every so often a casting will ask for an “about me” self-tape introduction where you talk about yourself for the casting director. Or perhaps you do not yet have a showreel to send to a production who will accept an “about me” self-tape instead.

If you don’t yet have one of these, this is very simple to make and put online. This article explains how to make one and what to include in it.

Content

Keep it short, to the point, and simple. As a rough guide to what to say, this works in most cases:

  1. your name, job, & location
  2. your experience/training
  3. ages/sizes etc
  4. contact details

So, for example:

Hi, my name is Marey J Smith and I’m an actor based in Berlin but working all over Europe.

I’ve worked as an actor for about five years now and have recently appeared as a major supporting in a film we shot in Croatia a few months ago and directed by Francois Rogan. It will be released later this year. Before that I was in several local student productions. And of course I have been attending local acting workshops for many years now as well.

My playing ages are about 16-25 and I’m 55kg.

You can contact me on the email address on screen now.

This is usually good enough for a self-tape.

Production

You can shoot a self-tape like this on your smartphone against a very plain background. For details on this, see here: Self-Taping and Audition.
