EVERYBODY IS GONE

Cameras with facial recognition blanket every street. Phones are constantly tracked. DNA is forcibly sampled and catalogued. The most sophisticated surveillance state the world has ever seen is being used right now in China to destroy the freedom of movement, speech, and thought of a group of people called the Uyghurs. Knowing they are under constant watch and living in fear, they stop gathering in one another’s homes, speaking their native language, and even praying. For any who attempt to resist, the consequence is often forcible internment in a prison, camp, or factory.

You may not have heard of this crisis. If you have, it is probably due to the work of a small cadre of exiles and journalists, telling a story the Chinese government does not want told.

Everybody Is Gone brings this vital reporting to life through an innovative, experiential event created in collaboration with a live, in-person audience. Participants will enter a built-out, physical environment that recreates a portion of a village in the Uyghur homeland. There, they will experience a sense of the lived reality of the Chinese government’s oppression, including by encountering a Village Meeting. During such weekly meetings, held in every area of the Uyghur homeland, Uyghurs are compelled to recite propaganda demonizing their own culture and read scripts denouncing themselves and their families for even the most basic displays of faith. Each element of this immersive experience is drawn directly from verified reporting about the Chinese government’s system of social and political control. Within this oppressive environment, the audience will bear witness to—and also become active participants in—these forced practices.

Uniting elements of journalism, live performance, and museum exhibitions, Everybody Is Gone gives participants an emotionally resonant experience that merely reading an article or even watching a video could never provide. Its unique format reaches audiences beyond those who already seek out news on foreign affairs. In so doing, it not only deepens the international conversation about this crisis, but also primes the public to respond.

Everybody Is Gone is a project of The New Wild, a multidisciplinary art lab. The team is composed of journalists, artists, and technologists and includes both Uyghur and non-Uyghur collaborators. Everybody Is Gone will premiere in Berlin in July 2022.
