about the project

For a low budget short film.

Logline: A letter exchange between lovers, a bridge between East and West. But what Helena and Louise don’t know is that their private messages serve as daily entertainment from Stasi Officer Bernd, who seems to constantly miss the point in this story. A queer history comedy that shines light on one of the most important moments in German History.

UNPAID If we get enough budget for the funding, we will be able to pay our actors, but for now, food and travel will be covered.

Looking to fill the following roles:
role 1 | actors | female
playing age: 21 - 29

ROLE: Louise
f, 21-29, German speaking, London based

Louise is a young, confident woman with a fascination for art and her girlfriend Helena. Openminded and determined, Louise is the objective one in the relationship – leading through facts and logical thinking. A doer. Not much of a feeler. Despite being trapped in the German Federal Republic with no way into the West and the arms of her partner. So, in November 1989, Louise decides that while she keeps the letter exchange between her and her girlfriend going, she might as well write her way out of misery...
role 2 | actors | female
playing age: 21 - 29

ROLE: Helena
f, 21-29, German speaking, London based

Helena is the counterpart to Louise. Not only, because she is living in the West, unable to connect with her girlfriend in the East, but because everything Louise is – Helena isn’t. She’s rather shy and soft spoken, prioritises emotions over logical solutions and is constantly concerned about her girlfriend’s well-being. Despite her original doubts, Helena knows she is essential for Louise’s masterplan. Why? Because she loves poetry, she’s a wizard with words – the perfect disguise to get her girlfriend out of her miserable living situation and back in her arms.
role 3 | actors | male
playing age: 25 - 40
role languages: Alemán
ROLE: Eberhardt
m, 25-40, German speaking, London based

Eberhardt is one of the younger officers in the surveillance department of the Stasi. He obviously loves his job, is a dedicated worker and overall, a smart guy. Stern, but smart. When he presents Bernd a new pile of letters of potential state crime to work through, he soon realises his boss has other interests. And while he doesn’t want to overstep a line, Eberhardt keeps pushing – trying desperately to lead Bernd into the right direction. Because surely, Eberhardt can’t be the only one who thinks somethings off with those letter
role 4 | actors | male
playing age: 40 - 60
role languages: Alemán
ROLE: Bernd
m, 40-60, German speaking, London based

Bernd has been working his way up in the Stasi since the early stages of the GDR. There is nothing that he loves more than his job, his country – and his personal office. God, how happy he was when he finally got a promotion and didn’t have to share an office with idiots anymore. Now, Bernd is responsible for the surveillance department. One of his jobs being the evaluation of letters that contain potential state crime. But when he receives the letter exchange between Helena and Louise...Bernd doesn’t quite get the problem. Instead, the girls writing turns into his personal entertainment, whilst misinterpreting pretty much...everything?
