Light Bulbs in Soil is a new theatre company here in Brussels and we are looking for a diverse group of actors and performing artists to join us. We are holding an open call/workshop on Monday 5th November, 6.30-8.30pm.
Information about the company:
Light Bulbs In Soil is a new theatre company based in Brussels. Founded by Helen Abbott and Carl Robinson, Light Bulbs In Soil is looking for members. Together, we will explore questions, provocations and stories which intrigue us; through devising, physical theatre and text. At its heart, this company will be an ensemble of artists working collaboratively to share ideas and develop their practice together. Our hope is ultimately to develop work to show in a public context, although initially the emphasis will be on ensemble building, exploration and play.
Helen Abbott is a British theatre director currently living in Brussels. Having obtained a BA in Acting from the Royal Academy of Scotland and completing an MA in Shakespeare and Theatre, Helen then moved into directing. Helen has worked on a variety of projects both in the UK and overseas and was the 2017 recipient of the John Fernald Award which supported her work as Assistant Director for the world premiere of ‘Persuasion’ at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. Helen is also an artist for ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association), creating devised performances in Theatre festivals around the world.
Carl Robinson studied Contemporary Theatre and Performance in Manchester, then an MA in Performance in Leeds, England, before co-founding the theatre company Trace Theatre, which toured European theatre festivals and UK venues with their collaboratively devised performances. During this time, he taught on various contemporary theatre courses at UK universities. Currently, Carl is teaching drama at The International School of Brussels. He would like to think he has some of the spirit of Peter Pan inside him- the boy who never grew up, so play and imagination are both important elements to the work he makes.
The companies and artists that inspire us include Frantic Assembly, Complicite, Pina Bausch, Goat Island.
The goal of this project is to provide a creative space for professional artists to develop a collective practice. Our long term goal is to seek funding and then find platforms for our work in Belgium and possibly further afield.
We are looking to form a diverse group with around 5-8 members to meet weekly for 3 hours in a rehearsal space in Watermael/Boitsfort, with extra hours when working towards a performance. If you are interested, or would like further information, please send us an email introducing yourself.
